3 Ways To Tell if Silver Holloware is Plated or Solid
March 08, 2017
Perhaps You have a family heirloom or you found a piece of silver holloware that you are curious to know if it is solid or if it is plated.
One simple method to determine if your silver holloware is plated is to turn the piece upside down and check the hallmark. If it is solid it will be marked either Sterling or 925. 925 is actually the percentage of silver contained in the piece.
They do have chemical test kits for silver. However you will have to find a spot on the bottom or on an edge where the mark from the test will not show too much because they can cause a bit of staining. Another option that sometimes works best but can be a bit destructive. With this method you have to use a file and file a little bit off of a bottom edge of the piece then use the testing solution on this. That way you get past the outer plating to test what is underneath. Then if you are still unsure you can use a 10 power loupe to look at the area that you used to test and often you may be able to see the delineation between the plated area and the underlying metal.
